UNESCO World Heritage

The Heritage Site stands for the splendid natural beauty of the Alps. At its heart lies the impressive Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau rock massif and the glacial landscape surrounding the Great Aletsch Glacier. On the southern slopes of the Bietschhorn, this high-alpine scenery is gradually transformed, over different altitudinal vegetation zones, into a submediterranean rocky steppe.

Covering an area of 824 square kilometers, the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO-World Heritage Site contains nearly all of the Bernese High Alps, with their monumental rock massifs, in the Cantons of Berne and Valais.

The UNESCO World Heritage Committee agreed to extend the Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn World Heritage Area during their annual meeting in Christchurch (NZ) on June 28th, 2007.

Parts of the Bernese Oberland municipalities of Guttannen, Innertkirchen, Meiringen and Schattenhalb now belong to the World Heritage Area.

This important UNESCO distinction brings with it a commitment to realize our responsibility to sustain and protect this unique high-alpine region for generations to come. The yellow line shows the perimeter of the World Heritage Area and the municipalities bordering on or in the area.

World Nature Forum

The visitors center of the UNESCO World Heritage Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch opened its doors in September 2016. In the interactive exhibitions the visitor experiences with all its senses the property and immerse into the thrilling and varying sceneries of the Alps. The vistor is confronted in a spectacular exhibition with thrilling films, interactive experience stations, infographics and artefacts. His exploratory mind is challenged with key questions associated to the use of the natural heritage. The Panorama space is the highlight of the exhibition, with a screen of 100 square meters, where spectacular movies from the World Heritage will excite the visitors.
